The campaign for Britain to make its In or Out choice with the European Union (EU) is gathering momentum in the lead up to the June 23rd referendum. In a globalised world, no country can hope to make an insular choice and that holds true for this crucial decision too.
For India, it’s a no-brainer – the UK outside the EU means a loss of a strong ally in this important trading bloc. And talk of an India-UK free trade agreement coming swiftly to sure up uncertainty is fanciful. The UK government’s own analysis released this week shows how the country would be significantly poorer on the outside.
India Inc.’s own firm stance against Brexit developed following extensive consultation with business leaders, both within the UK/EU and in India. The overwhelming view is that a potential Brexit would be an economic & strategic risk, not only in the short term but also the long term, for the UK, EU as well as India.
