Manoj Ladwa speaks to Jean-Paul Adam on India-Seychelles relations…

Jean Paul Adam Five on Five – Jean-Paul Adam Jean Paul Adam1. Why does India matter to Seychelles?

We share an ocean. We are maritime neighbours and we are much closer geographically than people think. But our ties go beyond geography – we also have a shared history where Indian traders have been a key factor in our economy for centuries. And the future promises even more: India has risen as an economic superpower and Seychelles is the perfect bridge between Africa and Asia.

2. Where do you see the biggest growth potential between the two countries?

Financial services are an area where we believe there is great potential for growth. India has also led the way in recent years in pushing the boundaries of technology and there is great potential for many of these technologies to be used in Seychelles – for example in renewable energy.

3. What was the biggest advance in India-Seychelles relations in 2010?

The official visit by President James Michel to India in June 2010 was a landmark for relations between the two countries. The visit highlighted the strength of the partnership that exists, but also demonstrated that one of the largest economies of the world and one of the smallest still have so many areas of cooperation, trade and investment to be explored.

4. Should Indian investors be concerned about piracy in your region?

Every country in the world needs to be worried about piracy because it is one of the biggest threats to maritime trade. There is an increase in commodity prices around the world due to increased costs linked to piracy, such as insurance. However, Seychelles itself is as safe as ever as an investment destination. With support from partners such as India we are able to ensure the safety of islands very effectively.

5. Is there any Indian business or political figure you admire? If so, who and why?

I think the current Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, deserves recognition for his role in preparing India for its role as economic superpower and subsequently ensuring that India assumes that mantle with humility and grace. All the while continuing to enhance its dynamism and improve its relations with partners, whether large or small.
